My name is Hana Kinoshita Thomson or Hana Underthetree (Kinoshita or 木下 means “under the tree” in Japanese).

I have a Bachelor of Psychology with First Class Honours from UNSW Sydney, taught English to the loveliest high school girls in Tokyo for three years, and am currently a freelance illustrator, as well as a student of Design at UNSW Art & Design in Sydney, Australia.

My aim is to create vibrant and engaging illustrations that communicate joyful, relatable or informative messages.

I'm particularly passionate about children's picture books, mental health, the Japanese language and culture, and of course, rabbits. I usually create my illustrations using coloured pencils or digitally on my iPad, and also dabble with ink/water colour/acrylic/gouache paints.

Some of my illustration work includes:

  • Hosting Mental Health Awareness Month x Artober, an Instagram challenge aimed at inspiring creativity while also raising awareness about mental health (2020).

  • Drawing over 300 illustrations for Casual Nihongo, a Japanese textbook written by Youtuber Akkie and published by ALC Press (2020).

  • Creating Japanese teaching resources for the Japan Foundation Sydney (2020).

  • Working as a Sketch Artist for a large insurance company during their Ideation Week (2019).

  • Making countless illustrated teaching resources during my time as a teacher in Japan (2016-2019).

  • Starting the Under the tree Store (existing online and at markets), which is home to greeting cards, stickers, zines, and more featuring my original characters Girl and Rabbit.

  • Ongoing illustration commissions of pets and people.

On this little slice of the internet, you can find my illustrations and other creations, as well as some original music. I hope they make your eyes and ears happy, and thank you for stopping by.

If you’d like, follow me on Instagram for more art or subscribe to my YouTube channel for more music. :)
